Yaad toh tab aayega na jab bhool jayenge- Gautam Hegde

Gautam Hegde

I remember when Star One was launched sometime in 2004. I was very new to the TV industry then and was completely in love with the channel- its tagline was Apni Tuning Jamegi and it had this complete fun feel to it, the promos, the packaging- it was like a wafer, crisp, fresh, you couldnt just have ONE! Sarabhai, Instant Khichdi, Remix, Guns n Roses, Pyar Ki kashti, Hotel Kingston (you may think I’m googling the names but the truth is I remember because I was awestruck that TV can be THIS too!!) And I secretly wished to be a part of Star One someday.

With the Mukul Srivastav, Hitesh, and Shilpa D Mello (MJHT)

And somehow I think God hears the whispers that you send to your own heart as well. A few years later, Vivek Bahl offered me to write for Deeya Singh’s Annu Ki Ho Gayi Wah Bhai Wah. And I was thrilled!! I did a few initial episodes of that but I couldnt continue due to some reasons. Then I got a call for another show called Seema Sudhir Sharma’s Chhotey Chhotey Sheher Bade Bade Sapney about two diamterically opposite sisters from a small town who come to a posh college in the metro. This show, no Santa Claus goodies for guessing, was Miley Jab Hum Tum!

We went on air on September 22, 2008 (I hope I am right else the fans will kill me; and if I am right please dont think I am like Subodh from Dil Chahta Hai!) and again I was super happy to write a youth show, something I always wished to write when I saw Hip Hip Hurray as a kid. I still remember Mayank, Nupur, Samrat, Gunjan, Uday, Diya, Benjy, CJ, Vatsala, Annie, Chacko, Chinu, their Valentine Days, their pentathalons, the trip to Morena, Samrat realizing he is in love with Gunjan (which by the way happened almost a year after the show aired), how fans would keep comparing ‘Mayur‘ with ‘Sajan‘ and the whole complaints about these people got so many minutes of scenes more and they got so many seconds less in the song! LOL! That sheer madness!

With Actor Arjun Bijlani

I miss MJHT- when I hear Khuda Jaane, I remember Sam-Gunjan, when I hear Ishq hua, I remember the one shot song in the foyer, when I hear Pehli baar mohabbat, I remember Mayank and Nupur’s passion. And when I hear Salaam E Ishq, I remember the crazy episode we wrote with Dill Mill Gaye and MJHT combined writers sitting in a room with Nikita Dhond, Rohini Singh, Anand Jain, Richa Yamini, Jyoti Tandon, Neeraj Sachdeva having Maggi noodles for hours together! I remember crying when the season one finale happened and the foursome met with an accident. Now there is sure a million fans who would wonder why we did that ever but lets not go there. 😉

when the writer became the actor!

And of course, I made my acting debut with the show. Nissar Parvej directed me as Chironji who came in Mayank and Nupur’s track, so yeah, Star One marked my debut as an actor as well! And then Chironji came back. I remember story writer Anand Sivkumaran’s sms to me- “Time to don the greasepaint again dude, Chironji return!” I bonded very well with Arjun and Rati.

Then there was Love Ne Milaa Di Jodi. Three brothers, three sisters, a romantic thriller. Now that was another fun show primarily because everyone on that show was so much fun to work with. Our first schedule to Panchgani, the boys and girls pulling each other’s legs in the make up room, there was laughter always on the set. The creative team was also very sorted on the show.

with the cast and  crew of LNMDJ

But then the sur of the show was made a bit soapy/drama because the channel was venturing with their next shows (Odhni and Geet) into a soapy/drama zone. When the show came to a closure also, it was sadder because we all bonded so much as a team-Pushkar Karmalkar, Sancheeta Bose, Jyoti Tandon, Jay Verma, Aparajita Saha, Shilpa D’mello, Radhika Borkar, Gaurav Khanna, Karan Tacker, Dishank Arora, Chandana Sharma, Simran Aur, Perneet Chauhan. Gladly, we all still catch up, we are on Facebook/ Blackberry/ and if nothing, just a phone call or a party invite away from each other.

I was briefly also a part of Dill Mill Gaye where I played Doogie who falls for Dr Ridheema whom I called Sweety beauty baby. I thought, whoa! Working with Karan Singh Grover THE STAR! But he was just so sweet! He and the Director Anirudh Rajderkar were very supportive of me. Being essentially a writer, I would change my lines as per what came to my head and not stick to the dialogue per se but they never complained and this applied to MJHT also. I remember I would just improvise something, like this one time when the script had me ask Nupur Mayank chala gaya? and I asked her Mayank chal basaa? and Rati was in splits and the Director had to call for a cut but we retained that and it just seemed funnier.

with the leads of Love Ne Mila Di Jodi

So thats what I gather, the channel was what I thought it was- FUN. It gave me a chance to work on projects I wanted to have on my CV (romantic comedies), it gave me friends (most of the cast members of LNMDJ, MJHT, writers, creatives) it gave me a chance to work with reputed Production Houses and I earned a lot of experience and made money for my first big house. Yes, us ghar ki eenth eenth mein MJHT aur LNMDJ basey hai, LOL!

with Jaskaran

Presently the shows that I’m writing are for Star Plus but the last prjoect I did for Star One was Geet, when they wanted a cameo writer for a track when Geet goes to her maasi’s place- it was like a new set up and involved romance and comedy. Once that was done, I had to leave.

The MJHT cast and Producers

Today the channel’s phased out and we wont get to see the ONE logo any more, but what matters is that somewhere it is still framed in our hearts, like the cupid in the end page of Love Ne Mila Di Jodi, like the whistle theme of Miley Jab Hum Tum, like the Ishq leta hai song from Dill Mill Gayye, like Maaheee from Geet. Its something we wont remember, because yaad toh tab aayega na jab bhool jayenge! 🙂

Life OK is coming with a new set of shows, so let’s all wait and watch what they get and hope we still have more characters that become memorable, more love themes, more jodis, kyunki bhai, dil toh bahut bada hai, jagah banane ki der hai!

  Gautam Hedge
(Screenplay Writer)

Gautam currently writes for Is Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, Sapno se Bhare Naina and Navya on StarPlus. We would like to thank Gautam, who has always enthusiastically come forward to share his StarOne journey with us which clearly was most memorable!

Quick 5 with Swati Pande!!

Swati Pande, has never shied away from experimenting with variety. What else explains a body of work that ranges from Geet-Hui Sabse Parayi to Pavitra Rishta, Behenein, Rang Badalti Odhani, Kayamath, to the most recent Mahadev on the newly revamped StarOne that is now called Life OK

Swati is still missed by the fans of Geet-Hui Sabse Parayi, who think she has had a great hand in sketching the character of Maan Singh Khurana that went on to become an iconic figure on the Virtual TV platform to perfection. Women don’t tire talking about Maan, so now, when she is all set to sketch the love story of Shiva, one would obviously be curious to know how it would turn out.

Swati as we see is one name, that has not only been associated with StarOne before its revamp, but also is a part of the strategy post it. We caught up with Swati and asked her a quick five questions and here is what she had to say.

Rangmunch: What about StarOne appealed to you the most as a Channel?

Swati Pande: Star One as a channel never shied from taking a big leap by showcasing youth oriented and shows in the rom-com genre when the Tv industry was inundated wth dramas. Even as much I like the latter but Star One gave us the platform for something different – both as an audience and as a writer!

Rangmunch: How has your association been as a maker with the Channel and the shows you did?

Swati Pande: The journey has been extremely fulfilling and exciting. I have had the chance to be associated with Geet and Rang badalti Odhani – both had a blend of drama, romance and comedy. With each of these shows I grew as a writer as I got to learn the nuances and the need for detailing in every scene.

Rangmunch: What are the kind of shows you look forward to on Life OK?

Swati Pande: Star One or now officially ‘Life OK’ stands true to its title. It tells you about cherishing what you have .. living and valuing the moments of your life – and that ‘moment’ could be that of courage, of emotion, of love or of reverence. I am hoping to catch a blend of shows that portray just that.

Rangmunch: Your sentiments at the moment, as the Channel is going in for a re-vamp?

Swati Pande: This is a difficult question! 🙂 Cliched but true – there are mixed feelings. The excitement for this being a new channel is immense but at the same time the lovely memories of Star One also lingers on! So I guess this is the moment of amalgamation – to tell yourself that LIFE was ok and it will be OK !!

Rangmunch: A message to all your viewers who have watched and loved your work on StarOne.

Swati Pande: Firstly a big thanks to them for being such a lovely audience of Star One. I would take this opportunity to make a sincere request to all – to accept Life OK and love it as much as you loved Star One. We make the shows but you all make us!

A Page from a Director’s Diary: Nissar Parvez on his journey with StarOne

Hello Everyone,
As usual the first few words are always the most difficult.
Star One…. Pheww! It actually took some time to sink in that it doesn’t exist anymore. Its my usual habit to switch on the TV and get to Star One, just to have a casual look at it. But today morning, the 18th of Dec, when I did that, it just didn’t show up. It wasn’t there. Then I realized the logo has been changed, and its a new name too. Life OK. I was frozen for that moment.
It took a lil time to sink in. It was over. But then I thought good things should always come to an end and I switched off my TV and started writing this article. Really bad at it. Hope it makes some sense. 😉
I think it was 5 years back, when I had got a call for this show called Koi Hai, and I had just taken up an episode of that and it was pretty interesting, one thing led to another. One good episode of Koi Hai got me another, and it went on, and then the channel offered me Dil Mil Gaye
With DMG cast and Crew
I still remember, in my first meeting with Star One, the Channel Head looked at me and said, you are Nissar? You are so young. I think she had doubts in her mind whether a young guy like me will be able to pull off Dil Mil Gaye. On the other hand, I thought, youth show young director nahi karega to kaun karega. I smiled on my own. Next meeting I made sure I had a lil beard. Haha!!
I was confident that I was doing it, and I did it.

With the DMG Team
Honestly, I had never thought that Dil Mil Gaye will become so popular. It was crazy and it was pure magic. You wont believe this, the core team still messages each other the lyrics of the song. For eg, someone will just sms, hum to chale they dost banke, and then someone will add in, jaaney kahaan dil mil gaye, and it goes on, until we have the entire song. That’s the connection.

All of us working on Star One were very emotional people, very very passionate, mad people. We were stupid fools. Hahaha!! We used to fight like crazy. All of us had a love and hate relationship, and this happened only because we were equally mad for our shows. We used to literally kick each other, pull each others hair etc, not talking for a few days, and then each one waiting for the other to break the ice, and we start off again, we hit off like there was never an issue. Hahaha!!! It was pure madness.
Rohini, Palki, Amita, Nikita, Nitin, Anand, Gul, Richa, Rishi, Neeraj, and many more. They were the mad caps. I had always heard women can be dangerous. Had experienced it for the first time. lolllll. They will kill me if they read this.
As I was doing DMG, I was offered Miley Jab Hum Tum. The idea of going back to college excited me. I grabbed the opportunity. It was lot of fun doing Mile too. It was a young team again and new madness.
We all just loved taking challenges. We were scared of monotony and as it was getting a lil monotonous, we decided to shoot a song without a cut. We did ishq hua and we actually achieved it. It was the pure madness of our core team, myself, Ravi, Richa, Nikita, Rishi, Neeraj and my Producers Seema and Sudhir for showing faith in us.

What next????? This is something that just keeps popping in my mind every now and then. I think it was November 2009. I got a call from Rohini, and she said she has something interesting. I had no idea at that point that “that something” will turn out to be GEET.
We formed a team. Gul agreed to Produce it and with myself, Richa, Rohini and Rishi on board, we were all set to launch another one. It was an experiment and it was too dramatic to the taste of StarOne. But we kept that thought aside, and we all got in with full conviction and honesty and started the search of our protagonists, and that just wouldn’t end. We kept looking and looking and looking, untill we zeroed on Drashti and Gurmeet. Yes!! Our favourite Maaneet.
There was a lot of rawness in their chemistry that really excited us, and gave us a lot of hope. But to our disappointment, the ratings were not too great initially. But we didn’t panic too much as it was expected since we all knew it was an experiment. Soon it was decided to shift gears, and get a lil of the Star One flavour. Geet was moved to Delhi, she lands up at Maans office, and we decided to do a song kurbaan hua. That was it!!
I never had an email id and so never had a Facebook account. I know its funny. Haha!!
With Gul and Gorky
One fine day , my friend Gorky told me “why don’t you open an email account and a Facebook account?” I gave it a thought, smiled at him and told him, “will u please open one for me.” He happily agreed. I was technically challenged. Haha!!
Till this point, I had no idea about this parallel TV industry that goes online. I was shocked to see the madness and the passion. I suddenly started having doubts on my own creativity. People were so into it. During my making of all my previous shows, I kept hearing of the popularity online, but always preferred to stay away from it. I think I always took work as worship, and so was always very conscious of any external elements diluting my passion. Haha!! Stupid of me.
With the Geet Crew
I was actually stupid coz Facebook gave me something that I will cherish for the rest of my life. 🙂
Now that I scroll up , I actually wrote quite a lot. Well I think it has finally sunk in, and so the words.
a long pause…………..
Its been a beautiful journey that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Whatever lil I am today, is because of Star One, the kind of trust it had shown in me, time and again. Star one has definitely given me the motivation to do many more exciting shows in future and I really hope I am able to live up to the expectations.
Gurmeet, Drashti, Hrishikesh Gandhi and Nissar Parvez
Its a huge challenge for us, as we have a new platform now. But hopefully, with all the love and trust that all of u have in us, we should be able to do it again.
I am sure there is a new Star One somewhere gaining momentum. Will meet you there guys.
Getting late at work. Time to say goodbye.
Love you All!

Nissar

The Romance with StarOne comes to a Grind Halt!

Change they say is the only constant thing in life. But change brings with it a lot of happy and sad moments. I still fondly remember my days in first year of college when my senior and I would religiously be glued to the Television in our hostel never to miss an episode of Remix, Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai. Thus started my romance with StarOne as a  channel that soon became my favorite.

At the outset, the Channel was not just entertaining it was addictive. As the list of programmes and the variety it offered only made TV viewing an inevitable habit, the wrapping up of the shows on it, became like a heavy moment to live with.

Strange isnt it? Who would ponder so much over a mode of entertainment. But StarOne besides being a total entertainer, offered variety of “Youth Shows” as everyone calls them, that no other Channel on Indian Television could boast of.

From Siddhant, Guns and Roses, Hotel Kingston, India Calling to Laughter Challenge, Dil Kya Chahta Hai, Men Mange More,Family Business to a totally different genre of romance with Remix, Dill Mill Gaaye, Miley Jab Hum Tum, Rang Badalti Odhani, Geet Hui Sabse Parayi, I fell head over heels in love. To say it was a non-living entity would be an understatement. With the varied emotions and the sleepless nights it gave me, I had no other option but to completely take a plunge into the madness. I have made some of the best friends through the Discussion forums of this Channel and today as the Channel bids adieu to its old avatar and takes a new form with a new name Life OK, I am finding it extremely hard to let go. Is it just me who feels this way?

We at Rangmunch.TV tried to get in touch with some of the known names and faces in the industry who have been closely associated with the Channel through their shows to know what they feel at the moment.

Industry Bids Adieu to StarOne Part 1:

Gul Khan (Geet-Hui Sabse Parayi-Producer 4Lion Films):  Our association with StarOne has been fantastic. Geet is a product of a perfect collaboration between the channel and us. Rohini Singh with her creative brilliance, Nissar with his Direction, Richa as the Creative Director, and Hrishi with the camera work made a brilliant team. All of us have worked so hard that there was never a disparity between channel and team. When we did drama in the beginning which was not working for us, I remember how we would sit and cry with disappointment. Richa once came home, and the TRP around that time was 0.1, we cried so much that we started laughing after that.

Then we put our minds together and decided to change the genre. The heavy drama and family was not working for us so we switched the Romantic-Comedy zone and that’s how the Geet everyone has gone onto love today was born. We discarded the old cast, brought Maan and Geet together and set off on the roller coaster ride. Things slowly started picking up. It soon became a cult. The amount we cried, we laughed that much later. But I admit, its been hard. We as a Production House would like to thank all the fans for sticking by us and loving us.

Anand Sivakumaran (Writer-Director):  What appealed about Star One to me was the intention – to create content for people like me who have no other alternative in terms of Indian Television. We who end up watching American and British TV shows because in sensibility and character attitudes and thought processes, they’re closer to us than any Indian TV show. The chance of doing something like that which reflected the thought processes, aspirations, realities of urban, metro India was exciting.

The journey had it’s ups and downs – in the first interaction when I was involved with Guns and Roses and Studio 1 was exciting but ultimately disappointing cause though we had lofty ambitions, somehow we didn’t manage to achieve them. the second round was more satisfying when I did Miley Jab Hum Tum cause while I feel we could have gone much further and taken the show even closer to what are urban realities and aspirations today, we did strike a chord with young urban people, we made a place in their hearts and we were the most successful show that Star One had ever seen. I feel if the channel had progressed further and taken the Miley genre, space further, perhaps it would have been way more successful. But that’s water under the bridge.

Life’s OK – no comments.

A bit of sadness – there was a unique vision that perhaps did not materialize as it should have. But I still think a channel like this has its niche audience and can be successful if someone’s willing to invest in it, nurture it and go out on a limb to make it happen

Message? Keep the faith. Another time, another platform, maybe not on TV but online – but there will be the shows we want to see. IT WILL HAPPEN.

Sukirti Kandpal (Pia- Pyar Ki Yeh Ek Kahani): Well…. The association has been amazing… Its been a wonderful journey. I’ve learnt a lot, grown up and been a part of the process. There is a name change and change is the way of life… 🙂 the show must go on… I think that’s the essence of life and my profession I love it.

Iqbal Rizvi (Director): Star One epitomized youth, it had a variety of shows that catered to the modern and the young audience whether it was Sarabhai vs Sarabhai or Guns and Roses or REMIX, these shows set the tone to what Star One was to cater to us for so many years. I remember there being a phase where I was contacted for many shows and the first thing they would tell me was it is not a saas bahu show it is a youth show.

STAR ONE hence was always a channel synonymous with youth and more importantly catered to an audience that had no other shows to look forward too. STAR ONE  did under go a metamorphosis over the last few years trying to cater to the gentry as well as the masses and the approach met with great success with shows  like Miley Jab Hum Tum, Rang Badhalti Odhani  and Geet Hui Sabse Parayi being hugely popular as RANGMUNCH would endorse.  I shall sorely miss STAR ONE with whom I had a close affinity having directed shows like REMIX and Jaane Pehchaane Se Yeh Ajnabi for them. THANK YOU STAR ONE for all those moments that lit up our lives.

Gautam Hegde (Writer): I remember when Star One was launched sometime in 2004, I was very new to the TV industry then and was completely in love with the channel- its tagline was Apni Tuning Jamegi and it had this complete fun feel to it. The promos, the packaging- it was like a wafer, crisp, fresh, you couldnt just have ONE!

And somehow I think God hears the whispers that you send to your own heart as well. A few years later, Vivek Bahl offered me to write for Annu Ki Ho Gayi Wah Bhai Wah!

Today the channel’s phasing out and we won’t get to see the ONE logo any more, but what matters is that somewhere it is still framed in our hearts, like the cupid in the end page of Love Ne Mila Di Jodi, like the whistle theme of Miley Jab Hum Tum, like the Ishq leta hai song from Dil Mil Gaye, like Maaheee from Geet. Its something we wont remember, because yaad toh tab aayega na jab bhool jayenge! 🙂

Star Desh/ Life Ok is coming with a new set of shows, so let’s all wait and watch what they get and hope we still have more characters that become memorable, more love themes, more jodis, kyunki bhai, dil toh bahut bada hai, jagah banane ki der hai!

Hitesh Kewalya (Writer): Miley Jab Hum Tum launched me as a writer in the television industry and that’s why Star One is more like a milestone in my life. Its been a great journey where the channel was more like a platform which enabled so many like minded creative professionals to come together and create.

‘Life Ok’ as we now speak. I am definitely looking forward to a spunky new channel and a variety of shows that should capture the audience’s imagination and who knows…Another Milestone…in the making!!

A huge thanks to the loyal…dedicated set of audience who shared the smiles and the tears of all the characters and made them their own. The audience is not just a set of eyeballs viewing an even happening…they are participants of this spectacle called a Story. A huge Thank you for all the bouquets and the brickbats for all the love and the hate mails for all the likes and the dislikes.

Noel Smith (Director):The channel was young in content , programs were youth based and it had spunk to it, which also was fun to shoot and be around many young fresh faces. I did “Geet- Hui Sabse Parayi” for long period of time. It was again a young , fun , romantic and lots of drama and I had all the creative independence on how to shoot a certain scene , which I think is most important thing for any Director to have and cast also fully supported me in it. So it was good in all. I always thought and still think we have a lot of literature which is untouched, stories by great writers, novels which can be very interesting for us to make and for people to watch. So I am hoping to see some shows based on stories /novels maybe in today’s setup or even short stories from all over the world to be translated into shows. It is the end of an era and a beginning of new one !! So hang on … while we get even better !

Note: These are excerpts from the conversations with the known names of the industry, whose full accounts will soon be published on Rangmunch.TV.

We will be back again, with more accounts, more stories of the people from the industry who have shared their experience with StarOne.
