I have shot more than 1000 episodes for StarOne: Hrishikesh Gandhi

StarOne was one such channel that gave plenty of opportunities as a Director of Photography or any  creative person for that matter with the kind of shows they came up with.  When I first saw Guns and Roses or Family Business, as a maker I myself was totally impressed by the contrast lighting, the rich look and feel. One had to have guts to want to try shows like that. Those are the kind of shows, one dreams of doing, since there is so much one can do as a DOP. Hence when  I got my chance to do shows on StarOne, it was but obvious that I would grab the opportunity.

During my stint with StarOne that has spanned over 3 years I have shot over 1000 episodes, where I did shows like Sshhh Koi Hai, 500 Episodes of Miley Jab Hum Tum and around 500 episodes of Geet. I have also shot a couple of sequences of Love Ne Mila Di Jodi. As I look back now, I feel honored and also proud of myself for having worked on shows such as this that have gone on to become so popular. StarOne as a channel being pulled off came as a huge disappointment, because, it was welcome change for those like me that didn’t want to try mundane stuff on TV.

Some people I cant fail to mention are Nikita and Rohini from Star. They were outstanding. The way they worked on the shows, made all the difference according to me.

I feel, however I did my best work with Geet. It was like an all new beginning. When I see the way dargah sequence was shot even today,I feel thrilled at the amount of variety we  have tried on the show. Even now when I get compliments on how Geet was a “look good” show, I always aspire to get similar recognition for my other work as well. Other DOP’s call me and tell me, how they love my work and it boosts me. When ever I am down and out, I make it a point to sit and watch Dulhe Ka Sehra, and that instantly peps me up and I tell myself  “Nahi Hrishi, you can do well” and I am smiling and geared up again.

Whenever Nissar(Parvez) and I discuss a new concept we try and design a unique look for each of our shows. Like for instance after an extremely glossy show with all good looking people on Miley Jab Hum Tum, we  we tried to keep the initial look of GEET very simple hence we went ahead with very natural and realistic lighting. In the Hoshiarpur sequences we had hard lights coming into the house. By the time the office sequence came, the set up changed and we swicthed to the look good module. Alot of effort goes into making a show look a certain way, Rohini, Gul, Richa from Endemol have all done their bit so perfectly, I think its ultimately team work that has paid off.

Everybody feels bad when a show comes to an end, but we also are often told its a part of life. May be it is, but for me the last day on the sets was extremely depressing. I was totally emotional. I remember this happened even when Miley Jab Hum Tum ended. Fans were very unhappy. But this time, it was StarOne as a Channel that was going off as well. So it was hard on all of us. I however fondly look back and think of how I was a part of two hit sagas on this Channel.

On the last day when I shot the close ups of Gurmeet and Drashti, I got very emotional since I instantly remembered their first shot and how they were then and realised how time has passed! All of the sequences I had shot with them came back to me, Kurbaan Hua, The Dargah Sequence, the wedding. Since I was one of the first members of the team, I think it was extremely hard for me to let go. You know, if the same team gets together and works together again it will rock.

The Aakhri Salaam promo of StarOne actually got me so nostalgic, it was like the end of an era! Memories of the shows I have worked on will always stay and I will always feel proud of the fact that I have worked on two shows on the Channel where I came to know how people took interest and paid attention to lighting and all the effort that goes on behind the camera! I am really going to miss Star One.

Unlike others Love Ne Mila Di Jodi was told from a Male Perspective: Jay Verma

Jay Verma

When you have been closely associated with the making of a show, you are bound to hold fond memories of the same. If we were to mention StarOne’s Dill Mill Gayye, Miley Jab Hum Tum, Love Ne Mila Di Jodi and Rang Badalti Odhani, we know you are already smiling, since these shows have been hugely popular among fans and are still missed! There is one name that commonly binds all these shows and that is Jay Verma who has lent his brains to penning down the stories of each of these shows at some point in time or the other.

I remember getting in touch with Mr.Verma, when I first learnt he was writing a couple of episodes of Dill Mill Gayye and would inquisitively bombard his mail box with loads of queries as an over enthusiastic fan. Ever since , I have keenly watched all his shows, and that’s the reason why, I felt, when we were doing a series of write ups on StarOne, this was one indispensable name!

Rangmunch: What as a maker appealed to you on StarOne as a Channel?

Jay Verma: Star One is a youth Channel unlike all the other channels, which cater to the typical saas-bahu saga. It was more about love romance and young actors were doing quite a good job there. The entire approach was very young and appealing, and that is what made it different from all the other channels that are around.

Rangmunch: Did it give more variety to a maker?

with the creative team of LNMDJ
Jay Verma: Absolutely. The best thing about Star One was it was all about Romance and that is what made it stand out, as it just does not have the soapy drama that is aired on every other channel.

Rangmunch: You have been associated with quite a few shows on Star One. Which one is your favorite?

Jay Verma: My favourite was Love Ne Mila Di Jodi. I just love the show; I loved the theme, from the channel and the producer’s side, all the actors who have now become very good friends after the show. The show also had an element of thrill wrapped in love and romance, which has not been experimented in India too much. Also every other show today on television is woman oriented show, so when we were planning Love Ne Mila Di Jodi with a male perspective, we were not sure if it would work in our favor or no. But we were so much in love with the story that we decided to go on with it. Though, it did not run for too long but people who have seen it have loved it.

Rangmunch: What do you think about the shows that Life OK is going to offer?

Jay Verma: I have not seen all the new offering of Life OK and neither have I seen the shows that were recently running on Star One but they have a very young team that I know of who think differently. So I guess they will come up with shows, which are not the regular run of the mill kind of shows but will offer variety to the viewers.

Rangmunch: What do you have to say about online viewing and the fans who think they are unable to contribute to TRPs?

Jay Verma: We cannot just ignore the online viewing. Finally, we have to create content for online viewing now and that is the future. We cannot avoid it and we should not avoid it.

Rangmunch: One message for audiences of Star One..

Jay Verma: There are several that I want to give them, but one, which is very important, is that, on behalf of all the people who work for Star One, I would like to say that we are just trying to make a story. As Fans and Viewers get too personal and write nasty mails, I would like to tell them that we are only doing our job and we are trying to make he story interesting. Every time we have a vamp trying to seduce our hero, it’s for the betterment of the story and not that we personally like the vamp or the negative character. Infact it is the other way round. We love our main leads and that is why we try to build things around them so that they could be highlighted even more.

Yaad toh tab aayega na jab bhool jayenge- Gautam Hegde

Gautam Hegde

I remember when Star One was launched sometime in 2004. I was very new to the TV industry then and was completely in love with the channel- its tagline was Apni Tuning Jamegi and it had this complete fun feel to it, the promos, the packaging- it was like a wafer, crisp, fresh, you couldnt just have ONE! Sarabhai, Instant Khichdi, Remix, Guns n Roses, Pyar Ki kashti, Hotel Kingston (you may think I’m googling the names but the truth is I remember because I was awestruck that TV can be THIS too!!) And I secretly wished to be a part of Star One someday.

With the Mukul Srivastav, Hitesh, and Shilpa D Mello (MJHT)

And somehow I think God hears the whispers that you send to your own heart as well. A few years later, Vivek Bahl offered me to write for Deeya Singh’s Annu Ki Ho Gayi Wah Bhai Wah. And I was thrilled!! I did a few initial episodes of that but I couldnt continue due to some reasons. Then I got a call for another show called Seema Sudhir Sharma’s Chhotey Chhotey Sheher Bade Bade Sapney about two diamterically opposite sisters from a small town who come to a posh college in the metro. This show, no Santa Claus goodies for guessing, was Miley Jab Hum Tum!

We went on air on September 22, 2008 (I hope I am right else the fans will kill me; and if I am right please dont think I am like Subodh from Dil Chahta Hai!) and again I was super happy to write a youth show, something I always wished to write when I saw Hip Hip Hurray as a kid. I still remember Mayank, Nupur, Samrat, Gunjan, Uday, Diya, Benjy, CJ, Vatsala, Annie, Chacko, Chinu, their Valentine Days, their pentathalons, the trip to Morena, Samrat realizing he is in love with Gunjan (which by the way happened almost a year after the show aired), how fans would keep comparing ‘Mayur‘ with ‘Sajan‘ and the whole complaints about these people got so many minutes of scenes more and they got so many seconds less in the song! LOL! That sheer madness!

With Actor Arjun Bijlani

I miss MJHT- when I hear Khuda Jaane, I remember Sam-Gunjan, when I hear Ishq hua, I remember the one shot song in the foyer, when I hear Pehli baar mohabbat, I remember Mayank and Nupur’s passion. And when I hear Salaam E Ishq, I remember the crazy episode we wrote with Dill Mill Gaye and MJHT combined writers sitting in a room with Nikita Dhond, Rohini Singh, Anand Jain, Richa Yamini, Jyoti Tandon, Neeraj Sachdeva having Maggi noodles for hours together! I remember crying when the season one finale happened and the foursome met with an accident. Now there is sure a million fans who would wonder why we did that ever but lets not go there. 😉

when the writer became the actor!

And of course, I made my acting debut with the show. Nissar Parvej directed me as Chironji who came in Mayank and Nupur’s track, so yeah, Star One marked my debut as an actor as well! And then Chironji came back. I remember story writer Anand Sivkumaran’s sms to me- “Time to don the greasepaint again dude, Chironji return!” I bonded very well with Arjun and Rati.

Then there was Love Ne Milaa Di Jodi. Three brothers, three sisters, a romantic thriller. Now that was another fun show primarily because everyone on that show was so much fun to work with. Our first schedule to Panchgani, the boys and girls pulling each other’s legs in the make up room, there was laughter always on the set. The creative team was also very sorted on the show.

with the cast and  crew of LNMDJ

But then the sur of the show was made a bit soapy/drama because the channel was venturing with their next shows (Odhni and Geet) into a soapy/drama zone. When the show came to a closure also, it was sadder because we all bonded so much as a team-Pushkar Karmalkar, Sancheeta Bose, Jyoti Tandon, Jay Verma, Aparajita Saha, Shilpa D’mello, Radhika Borkar, Gaurav Khanna, Karan Tacker, Dishank Arora, Chandana Sharma, Simran Aur, Perneet Chauhan. Gladly, we all still catch up, we are on Facebook/ Blackberry/ and if nothing, just a phone call or a party invite away from each other.

I was briefly also a part of Dill Mill Gaye where I played Doogie who falls for Dr Ridheema whom I called Sweety beauty baby. I thought, whoa! Working with Karan Singh Grover THE STAR! But he was just so sweet! He and the Director Anirudh Rajderkar were very supportive of me. Being essentially a writer, I would change my lines as per what came to my head and not stick to the dialogue per se but they never complained and this applied to MJHT also. I remember I would just improvise something, like this one time when the script had me ask Nupur Mayank chala gaya? and I asked her Mayank chal basaa? and Rati was in splits and the Director had to call for a cut but we retained that and it just seemed funnier.

with the leads of Love Ne Mila Di Jodi

So thats what I gather, the channel was what I thought it was- FUN. It gave me a chance to work on projects I wanted to have on my CV (romantic comedies), it gave me friends (most of the cast members of LNMDJ, MJHT, writers, creatives) it gave me a chance to work with reputed Production Houses and I earned a lot of experience and made money for my first big house. Yes, us ghar ki eenth eenth mein MJHT aur LNMDJ basey hai, LOL!

with Jaskaran

Presently the shows that I’m writing are for Star Plus but the last prjoect I did for Star One was Geet, when they wanted a cameo writer for a track when Geet goes to her maasi’s place- it was like a new set up and involved romance and comedy. Once that was done, I had to leave.

The MJHT cast and Producers

Today the channel’s phased out and we wont get to see the ONE logo any more, but what matters is that somewhere it is still framed in our hearts, like the cupid in the end page of Love Ne Mila Di Jodi, like the whistle theme of Miley Jab Hum Tum, like the Ishq leta hai song from Dill Mill Gayye, like Maaheee from Geet. Its something we wont remember, because yaad toh tab aayega na jab bhool jayenge! 🙂

Life OK is coming with a new set of shows, so let’s all wait and watch what they get and hope we still have more characters that become memorable, more love themes, more jodis, kyunki bhai, dil toh bahut bada hai, jagah banane ki der hai!
