International Segment: Rangmunch.tv Recommends Humsafar! Episodes # 9-14 update



Author’s note: Watching six episodes of Humsafar at a go was akin to plugging my heart into an electrical socket for charging.  I was happy I was finally getting down to catch the episodes I sorely missed these last few weeks. As I started watching them one after another, my heart started thudding at a faster pace with each passing episode and even came to a standstill at few scenes which left me literally thumping at my chest to ease the pain that was quickly replacing my heartbeat.

Part of me envies those of you who have watched the episodes every week with enough days in between to recover. Another part of me is thankful for things that kept me away for it would have been impossible to concentrate on anything else while letting go of the injustice meted out to our dearest Khirad.

Swallowing the choicest of ‘gaalis’ in all the languages I know, aimed at those responsible for breaking a beautiful relationship,  I begin to pen down my thoughts on the episodes, which have brought life to emotions that clearly demarcate  human from evil.

Last drops of romance before the storm:


Episode 9 features two of the cutest romantic scenes between Ashar and Khirad. There is something about rains that magnifies our feelings many fold. And romance is one which is instantly associated with rain. Khirad’s childish glee at getting wet in the pouring rain in their yard with Ashar’s loving gaze and gentle laughter teasing her about it has been shot to perfection.



Another scene that made me grin is when Ashar is about to drop Khirad at her friend’s marriage.  Ashar’s reluctance in letting Khirad out of his sight and his possessiveness, pride in her beauty, and above all his singular devotion towards her is evident in this scene. Probably the last romantic scene between them for a while before all hell breaks loose.

Too Little Too Late

After an agonizing week apart in which Ashar does not speak with Khirad due to his insecurity regarding her non-existent relationship with Khizar, he finally calls her to let her know how much he misses her and loves her. Khirad is eager to have him back as she awaits to share the news of her pregnancy with him. Ashar rushes back home only to witness a scene play out in front of him that shocks and shatters him.



Betrayed by those closest to them, Ashar begins to hate Khirad, while Khirad gets kicked out of her home by Ashar’s mother in his absence. She leaves for Hyderabad nursing a broken heart and their baby in her womb. She takes refuge with Batul khala and her family who support her through one of the toughest times in her life.

“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”

But I failed to realize it included mothers like Farida who would go to any extent in the name of pride, family status, and misplaced love even if that meant ripping apart her son’s heart to pieces. She took the term ‘evil’ to a different level with her flawless scheming and callous disregard for her son’s feelings.

Last nails in the coffin:

~ Hearing his mother state that Khirad left their home with Khizar never to return shakes Ashar to the core and shatters him into a nervous wreck. He vows never to let Khirad into his life ever again.


“Khirad  mere liye mar chuki hai. Na to main uski shakal dekhna chahta hoon naahi uski awaaz sunna chahta hoon. Agar galti se woh mere saamne zinda aa bhi gayi, I would kill her.”

~ Khirad finally manages to get Ashar on the phone only to realize he does not wish to talk to her. His silence on hearing her voice and the way he keeps the phone without saying a word tells her more than any words would.


“Mera shauhar mujhe badkirdhaar samajhta hai. Mere koi baat sune baghair, mujhe safai dene ka ek mauka diye baghair, mujhe mujrim karaar de chuka hai. Aisa toh duniya ki kisi bhi adalat mein nahi hota hai. Agar woh mujhse mohabbat karta tha to usne mujhpe aitbaar kyon nahi kiya. Meri baat kyon nahi suni.”

~ When Khirad goes into labour pains her one thought is to reach out to Ashar. She calls him only to hear the harshest words a beloved can ever speak. Ashar’s words slices through her heart and makes her cry out in agony.


“Aaj to tumne yahan pe phone kar liya aayinda mat karna kyonki tum mere liye mar chuki ho. na tumhara shakal dekhna chahta hoon naahi tumhari awaaz sunna chahta hoon.  Abse mera tumse koi talook nahi hai.”

~ After giving birth to a beautiful baby girl, Khirad vows to survive without Ashar, unable to digest the fact that the one person she considered her life had turned his back on her, humiliated her leaving her tarnished for the rest of her life.

“Us roz jab mezaan kayam hoga, sabse badi adaalat lagegi, sab munsifon se bada munsif insaaf kar raha hoga, tab tumhe kahin panah nahi miley gi tumhare saari taqat us roz khaak mein mil jayegi. Jab tak mein tumhe maaf nahin karoongi Ashar, mera Allah bhi tumhe maaf nahin karega. Aur Ashar Hussain apni beti ki kasam khake kehti hoon us roz main tumhe maaf nahin karoon gi!”

Rangmunch Memorable Moments

RMM #1 The scene that was so cold heartedly orchestrated by the two evil sisters was so gut wrenching that it was no less than pre-meditated murder. What we saw was the death of faith, trust, hope, and above all love in one horrific slash, by words so mercilessly uttered by Ashar’s mother and Khizar. Ashar’s deafening silence when Khirad repeatedly hoped for her husband’s ‘yakeen’ in her, buried all things good in a relationship as sacred as marriage. 



Less said the better when it comes to Khizar’s reasoning behind his betrayal. He ruthlessly squashed an innocent woman’s dreams to further his own. His words about Khirad’s incompatibility with Ashar were designed to act as an arrow dipped in poison to relentlessly prick at Ashar’s already bleeding heart.

RMM #2 The scene where Khirad wakes up in the dead of the night and prepares to leave for Karachi to meet Ashar and set things right is something that will haunt  me for a very long time. Khirad tries desperately to remove the imaginary filth and grime that she feels has stuck to her. It symbolizes her inner turmoil at her name and character being tarnished and her desperation to clear her name of all the muck that has been unjustly thrown at her.

Writer Farhat Ishtiaq, director Sarmad Khoosat, and actor Khirad get a standing ovation from Rangmunch for giving us a scene that transcends excellence.

Questions swirling in my head:

1.   Why would Khizar help in breaking Ashar and Khirad’s marriage for Sara’s sake when he is blindly in love with Sara himself and would make more sense for him to want Ashar to be happy with Khirad leaving Sara free to be pursued by him? This is besides the money angle to his reason for betraying Khirad’s friendship.
2.   Love is like a sunlight streaming through one’s heart. Take the sunlight away, replace it with a candle or a torch and its not love in its purest form anymore. Why would any woman want to settle for a love that is forcibly attained through scheming and plotting?  It is sad that an intelligent, independent, modern girl like Sara will want to possess love by devious means instead of letting it shine through her heart on its own accord.

What the F*$#?: BHAISAAB AAPNE MERE ACTOR KO DEKHA?

It’s the holiday season and most of us lucky ones are already off on our vacations. In fact even this piece is being typed right in the middle of my holiday (see how conscientious I am). But the very mention of holidays sends shivers down the spines of producers, channel executives cause it means their actors will be gone bye bye. Meaning no one to shoot with. Meaning – OH MY GOD! What in the name of God are we going to telecast?
Of course since actor holidays are planned and sanctioned in advance most times there is no cause for panic as writers have worked overnight and channel execs have kept their critical feedback to the barest minimum so that relevant portions can be shot with departing actors and audiences still manage to get their daily fix whether in station or thru You Tube etc.
The madness really begins when actors vanish without prior notification, sometimes for fairly long periods of time. That’s when writers, directors and producers must get their creativity to play Hooky with all known laws of elasticity and come up with mind boggling solutions to sustain the fiction that the character is part of the running storyline when in factor the actor is nowhere on the scene. Here are some of the common and uncommon gambits. 
YAADEIN YAAD AATI HAI
Truly the most clichéd and the most hated device used to cover up for the lack of an actor. The FLASHBACK – where an actor who’s too nice or too stupid to gutli maaro conjures up memories of shared happier or sadder times. And the editor and assorted assistant creative directors sift through hundreds (and at times thousands) of back episodes to pull out earlier shot and telecast scenes. The interesting thing is that this device works as well for heroes/heroines as for villains. Instead of romantic memories all one needs to do is think of the baddie’s crimes against self, extended family and society at large. Set off with dramatic music one gets a thrill packed episode that might actually be pacier and rate higher than the normal ones. And in case there aren’t enough memories or old scenes, the editor still has one more solution to fill up screen time – slow mo all the existing footage so it goes on and on and on. This is also one of the most reliable and acknowledged cures for chronic insomnia.
THIS IS A KIDNAPPING. TUMHARA KIDNAP HUA HAI
This used to be a clever device, unfortunately now it’s been used so much – it’s become a cliché. Essentially funda is hero/heroine has decamped with current love interest, come down with illness, broken a bone, broken a heart, gotten pregnant and needs to have a quickie MTP (what you getting all shocked and moralistic about – if it can happen after dandiyas, why not after endless on screen romancing – dressing rooms can get pretty lonely, you know). Whatever the reason, the upshot is actor isn’t around.
Now particularly when ratings have been dipping, audience interest is flagging and channel powers that be are dropping hints about serving termination notices, this is a good time to pump up audiences with a thriller track. So kill two birds with one stone – make the missing actor vanish and introduce a kidnapping track.
And in case the actor in question has been particularly troublesome/gets paid too high a fee and the lack of the actor is working better than his/her presence, sometimes the kidnapping morphs into a murder situation. Then of course depending on audience response the character can be brought back later either with his/her own face or somebody else’s. (In our country it would seem surgeons are so talented that they can not only put someone else’s face on you but also alter your height, weight, age, body structure et al to look exactly like someone else – I wonder why no one is thinking of making Anna look like Sonia so that we can finally have some semblance of governance in our nation).
TU NAHIN, KOI AUR SAHI
This is a veritable dream come true for actors playing secondary or peripheral parts in a show. Since the main actors are away and the flashback/missing methods have either been already used or cannot work for some reason, the only solution available is to bring these ancillary characters centre stage and do a track around them. And at times the track works so well and the characters become so popular that they end up taking over the whole show and the primary characters/ actors are given short shrift. Like they say – ‘tis an ill wind that blows no one no good.’
But there are times when this stratagem fails and badly. Like when I was doing this show where the actor and actress were both on vacation. I couldn’t move the narrative to the sub characters cause some of them had walked out because the entire focus was on the lead and they were feeling unwanted and unused. A couple of them were around but we didn’t want to use them cause they were so totally unwatchable. There was a kid character whom everyone liked but he had exams. Another popular character was down with malaria.
Ultimately the only actor who was both available and watchable was – Wait for it – the buffalo. I kid you not. And by the way the buffalo track worked and rated. Actors may not be cattle but cattle definitely are stars.
SO JAA RAJKUMARI
There are probably a zillion other tricks and techniques used to cover up the absence of an actor. But to my mind the following was by far the most brilliant and also a devastating F.U. delivered to a troublesome actor.
Of course it did help that the show was in the fantasy genre and we kind of had a license to get away with pretty much anything. But even then this was sheer genius and I doff my creative hat to the producer (also one of the nicest and most dignified people I have met in this business) who came up with it.
The solution? The actress in question was made the victim of a powerful spell that rendered her comatose (there are those uncharitable souls who claim that there was no change in her expression and performance before and after this incident). She was entombed and a new character was introduced whose mission was to find a way to bring her back to life.
Of course that mission stretched on and on and the show went on merrily for the remainder of its duration with the new characters and their adventures and a good time was had by all. Only in the last scene of the last episode was the spell broken and the original heroine brought back to life and that too for just about 30 seconds.
Be afraid actors, be very afraid
‘Nuff said. Happy 2012.

I always emphasize upon the aspect of "expectation of reality” – Amit Jha!

Crime shows on Television today have gained huge popularity with the realistic approach they follow. We not only learn from whatever we see on screen and understand how one has to be aware of their surroundings, at times, what we see also leaves a deep lasting impact on us. Hence, it becomes very important on the part of the makers involved with the show to keep in mind, that stories that depict gory facts, have to have a right balance of information and visual appeal. 
So, are these shows scripted? If so, to what extent are they? How does a Director or a Scriptwriter of such a show carry out his job? Lets find out through Amit Jha, the Director of Sony’s late night show ‘Crime Patrol.’

Rangmunch: You are dealing with real life stories. As a Director what is the research that goes into shooting an episode of crime patrol?

Amit Jha: Crime Patrol is a non-fiction series with real life cases depicted therein. As a Director, I have a two-fold approach to my research:

1. I must know the Script so well that I understand what must be acted to perfection in the performance of every scene, so as to bring out the cause of the crime as well as the criminal intent of the crime.

2. I strive to achieve an environment of excellence by sharing the possibilities of the Script with my team and working towards crystallization of the vision that is desired to be achieved in the Story. 

Rangmunch: What is your take on the increasing rate of criminal activities all over the world? As a person from the creative media, what would you do at your level to curb it?

Amit Jha: Global Organized Crime and terrorism pose major threats to national security, global economy and can have a damaging effect on the political structures of countries by destabilizing governments. International agencies like the United Nations and extradition treaties between the nations have made it possible to fight crime and punish criminals. Crimes have their roots in the local streets where the lust for power, big money, and revenge emerge due to poverty, unforgiving attitude, and ignorance of people. Therefore, as a person from the creative media I would think globally and act locally by making efforts to work upon such projects which would increase awareness among the viewers about the causes of crimes and suggestive measures of curbing crime. 

Rangmunch: What are the things you keep in mind while shooting the fictional part of a real story? How do you tone gory and graphic deals and know where to draw the line? 

Amit Jha: While shooting the fictional part of a story I always emphasize upon the aspect of “expectation of reality.” I ensure that the fictional part is performed with commitment to the characters in the story and nature of crime. I believe that if the actors are committed to what they are doing, they can make the audience believe almost anything, even with the most natural performance. There is a saying, “Violence perceived is violence achieved.” While shooting I keep in mind that it is not essential to show the exact act of violence as they are of a gruesome nature, so I take up gory discretion shots, which leave the audience to imagine the gruesomeness of the criminal act. This is where I draw a thin line between depicting the actual criminal act and fiction.

Rangmunch: Which is that one case that got you totally disturbed or disoriented as a person while dealing with it?

Amit Jha: An episode which I directed recently, Jharna Chemical Case, was based upon a man’s self-realization and guilty conscious which led him to confess his assistance in the crime of murder. It got me totally disturbed and disoriented.

Rangmunch: What do you think has worked in the favor of Crime Patrol as a show? 

Amit Jha: The very concept and essence of Crime Patrol, which is to create awareness among the audiences about the cause of a crime, has worked in the favor of the show. And beside that, I strongly believe that selection of story has an important part to play in it. While shooting also we take care that the look of show should be real so that people can relate it with their life. We take care that performance of actors should look real rather than dramatic. I think that’s why these days people can easily connect them self with the show.
Rangmunch: Why did you take up Crime Patrol as a show over other fictional Dramas on TV?

Amit Jha: I took up Crime Patrol as a show because I like to work upon social issues and do something more realistic like true stories, which involve creating awareness among the audience.

Rangmunch: Why do you think, not many shows like Crime Patrol are made in India (on Fiction Channels), while we totally enjoy watching the International versions of similar shows? 

Amit Jha: I believe that it is us who have to make the difference by taking an initiative of making more shows to create awareness among the audiences, as there are very few shows like Crime Patrol which are being made at the time being. 

Rangmunch: On a totally contrary note, it is said these shows actually educate criminals about crimes. What is your take on the same?

Amit Jha: I strongly disapprove of the notion that such shows educate criminals about crimes. The actual act of crime and its gruesomeness is not shown; the gory discretion shots and anchor’s speech are effective modes of presenting the nature of the crime and the story. This makes the audiences aware of the possibilities of occurrence of crimes and helps them to curb crime. We make sure while editing the episode that the content shown does not offend or hurt the sentiments or beliefs of the audiences.


Rangmunch: When the show first started, it had two hosts Sakshi Tanwar and Anup Soni. Any particular reason why you picked Anup Soni as the face of the show?

Amit Jha: It was entirely SONY TV’s decision to pick Anup Soni as the face of the show.
